· While homicide is the 4th leading cause of death for black men, it is not in the top 10 for white men. · Leading causes of black male mortality are heart disease (23.7%), cancer (20.9%), unintentional injury (7.4%), and homicide (5.1%) (link) · Leading causes of white male mortality are heart disease (24.7%), cancer (22.4%), unintentional injury (7.2%), and chronic respiratory disease (5.9%) (link) · Black men are 6X more likely to be imprisoned than white non-Hispanic men · Data for incarceration rates is surprisingly difficult to obtain, particularly when seeking to focus on African-American rates · The Netflix documentary “13th” is a helpful reference for better appreciating the racialized history of incarceration in the United States. · The average wealth of a black household where the head has a college degree is less than 70% of the wealth of a white household where the head has completed high school only. · Household net worth reflects the broad range of societal and behavioral influences on wealth accumulation – average inheritance size, average income, financing/debt commitments, education, and many others. · The Tulsa massacre of 1921 and Freedman’s bank failure are among the historic examples of tragic losses experienced by the black community · African-American families have the highest rate of single-parent families of all races · In 1965, 24% of black infants and 3.1% of white infants were born to single mothers. By 1990 the rates were 64% and 18%, respectively (link) · Children from single-parent homes are 2X as likely to drop out of high school, 2.5X as likely to become teen mothers, and 1.4X as likely to be idle -- out of school and out of work -- as children who grow up with both parents. Children in one-parent families also have lower grade point averages, lower college aspirations, and poorer attendance records. As adults, they have higher rates of divorce. " What matters for children is not whether their parents are married when they are born, but whether their parents live together while the children are growing up.” (link) · Even after correcting for differences in income, which are significant, black students consistently under perform in most measures of academic performance from a young age (link) US Senate Qualifications · At least 30 years of age · U.S. citizenship for at least 9 years · Residency in the state a senator represents at time of election · Elected by state residents through primary and general elections African Americans/Black are 13% of the US population and ~3% of the US Senate.
